Connie K. (Barnes) Gibbs, 55, of Mt. Vernon died at 4:25 p.m. Wednesday, February 8, 2006. Connie was the Executive Director of the Posey County Chapter of the American Red Cross for the past 14 years. She received the Anthony Boehm Volunteer of the Year Award in 2000 for her commitment to the Red Cross. Connie was Coordinator for the Safe Kids Coalition, and Indiana State Service Council Member from 1997-1999, an Armed Forces Services Volunteer and Home Team volunteer and headed many blood drives in Posey County and worked several area disasters for the Red Cross. She was a longstanding member of the United Way of Posey County where she served as the Leadership Giving Dinner Chairperson in 2005. Connie was a longtime member of the Mt. Vernon Kiwanis Club and served as Secretary/Treasurer and received the Club Officers Award from Kiwanis International. She served as Executive Secretary of the Mt. Vernon Chamber of Commerce in 1990 and 1991 and was a member of the national Association of Female Executives. She was a committee member for Mt. Vernon’s 175th Birthday Celebration and was presented a Key to the City by Mayor Jackson Higgins. Connie and her husband helped start Troop #499 Boy Scouts of America and was active with many area Troops and Packs. She received the Silver Beaver Award and the District Award of Merit, (Buffalo), from the Boy Scouts of America for her commitment. Connie was a lifelong member of the Mt. Vernon First Church of the Nazarene and was a Song Minister, youth leader, Sunday school teacher and served on the Church Board for the past several years. She was a graduate of Mt. Vernon High School Class of 1968 and attended University of Evansville’s Nursing School. She was a Candy Striper at Deaconess Hospital. Connie was preceded in death by her sister in law, Ruth Gibbs in 2001 and her brother in law, John Gray in 2005.
Connie is survived by her husband of almost 36 years, Robert Gibbs of Mt. Vernon; sons, Matthew Gibbs and his wife Sara of Mt. Vernon and John Gibbs of Mt. Vernon; her parents, Thelma Turner and her husband Bill of Mt. Vernon; and Leslie Barnes and his wife Sharon of Mt. Vernon; a brother, James Barnes of Evansville; her sister, Regina Gray of Mt. Vernon; and her granddaughter, Winnie Littlepage of Mt. Vernon; her brother in law, Jim Gibbs of Mt. Vernon and Charlie Gibbs and his wife Katrina of Posey County, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 13, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Austin Funeral Home, 1330 East Fourth Street in Mt. Vernon with burial in Black Cemetery. Friends may call from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, February 12, and from 9:00 until service time on Monday at the funeral home. Memorial Contributions can be made to the Mt. Vernon First Church of The Nazarene or Posey County Chapter of The American Red Cross.
