Clifton Gerald “Jerry” Ziegler, 86 of Carmi died Sunday, June 8, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville. He was born on January 29, 1928 in Piggott, Arkansas, the son of Earl Ernest and Rachael (Horn) Ziegler. He married Phyllis Zehner and she preceded him in death.
Mr. Ziegler partnered with Fred Ziegler & Marvin Hill of Crossville and owned Modern Gas located in Grayville and Fairfield. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Stokes Chapel Church. He was a lifelong member of the Carmi VFW Post 3851 and served as Commander and the Carmi American Legion Post 224. He loved his country and fought hard for Veterans’ rights. He enjoyed fishing, golf, helping people, reading his Bible, watching John Wayne movies, and was a “jokester”. He especially loved his family and his dog “Little Britches”.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Perry & Becky Ziegler and daughter and son-in-law, Terry and Rick Abell, all of Carmi; grandchildren, Michelle & Lani Thompson of North Carolina, Clifton Gerald Ziegler III and Shay & Scott Gilstrap, all of South Carolina, Marissa &Jared Wilson of Kentucky; five great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Ava, Braden, Kameron & Mason; brother, Fred Ziegler of Crossville; sisters, Lana Fay Edwards of Arkansas, Earlene Isles and Evelyn Pethel, both of Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Phyllis; children, Clifton Gerald Ziegler II “Little Jerry” and Teresa Lynn Ziegler; brothers, Cecil Ziegler and Gaylond Julian; sister, Florence Ella Hardin; and grandson infant Thomas.
Visitation will be from 4-7pm on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Carmi. Military rites will be conducted at the funeral home at 7 pm by the Carmi American Legion and VFW Posts. Private family services will be held at a later date.
