Bertis L. Read, 89 of Mt. Vernon, passed away Wednesday January 18, 2017 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. He was born August 5, 1927 in Harrisburg, IL the son of Melvin and Tina (Newcomb) Read. He was married to Ruth Read and she preceded him in death in January of 1999. He then married Norma Jean Jackson on October 9, 1999.
Bertis worked for the United Mine Workers of America. He enjoyed woodworking and extensive traveling with his family. He attended the First Christian Church in Mt. Vernon.
He is survived by his wife Norma Jean; his children, Stephen Read, Tracy Read, Misty Shelby, Connie Giamarco, Penny McDaniel, Francie Anderson, Ray Hutson, Dale Chamness, Paula, Michael, Bryan, and Cathy Erwin, Pam Curtis, and Cristi Gross; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sons, David and Rick Read.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday January 20, 2017 at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home at 1330 E. 4th St., Mt. Vernon, IN with burial at 3 p.m. at Highland Memorial Cemetery in Mt.
