Ben York, 86, of Carmi, passed away Friday, October 23, 2015 at 7:17 a.m. at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. He was born on December 13, 1928 in Norris City, the son of Charles Edgar and Sarah Helen (Hill) York. Ben married Bernita Carolyn (Campbell) Leithliter on February 20, 1960. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and worked in shipping and receiving for General Foods.
Ben is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carolyn York of Carmi; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Brenda and Bill Goss of Darien, IL, Joyce and Gary Arvin of Lockport, IL, Teresa and Barry York-LaHa of Burbank, IL and Rebecca York-Sevening of Alsip, IL; two sons and a daughter-in-law, George Leithliter of Carmi and Gregory and Terri York of Plainfield, IL; 18 grandchildren, Justin (Beth) Leithliter, Kim Goss, Billy Goss, Mike Goss, Bethany (Allen) Kadivar, Makailah Arvin, Ryan York, Jason Creed, Justin Creed, Jonathan Giblin, Dylan Giblin, Mary LaHa, Sarah LaHa, Carissa Sevening, Devin York and Billy Sevening; and four great-grandchildren, Mikey & Chloe Leithliter, Brady Kadivar and Madison Giblin. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Charlene Tait, Ermadene Hosick, Zula Lowery and Imogene York; a brother, Edward York; and a grandson, Benjamin Leithliter.
Memorial services for Ben York, 86, of Carmi, will be at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, October 26, 2015 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi with Mike Fields officiating followed by full military rites by the Carmi American Legion and VFW. Inurnment will be held at a later date in West Union Cemetery near Carmi. Friends may call on Sunday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Ben's grandson, Benjamin Leithliter's memory to Shriners Hospital or the Ronald McDonald House, 550 S. 1st., Louisville, KY 40202 and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home.
