Aaron Burns

Aaron F. Burns, 91, of Carmi passed away at 5:23 p.m., Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital in Owensboro, KY. He was born July 25, 1922 in Okmulgee, OK the son of John R. and Myrtle Margaretta (Fitzgerald) Burns. Aaron married Shirley Adams on October 2, 1942. For 24 years he co-owned along with his brother, Bob, Burns Drilling Company. Aaron later retired after 25 years with Peabody Coal where he was a construction supervisor. He was a World War II Army veteran serving under General Mark Clark in the 1st Infantry division, 347th Artillery Battalion, Battery B. He trained in North Africa and fought in combat north of Rome, Italy.
Aaron was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carmi, was a 60 year member of the Eldorado Masonic Lodge, was a 32nd degree mason, a member of the Scottish Rite and the Ainad Shrine. He enjoyed his family, gardening and was current event advocate.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Shirley of Carmi; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Richard Edds of Livermore, KY; a granddaughter, Shirley Edds Rose and her husband Mike of Louisville, KY; three sister-in-law, Mildred (John) Kelly, Marie Burns and Julia Burns and a brother-in-law, John Stanley.
Aaron was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, Patti Galbraith, Margaret Burns, Doris Jean Burns, Ruth Ann Burns and Marjorie Stanley and three brothers, Robert B. "Bob" Burns, John R. Burns, Jr. and Bill Burns.
Funeral Services for Aaron F. Burns, 91, of Carmi will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church in Carmi with Rev. Beckie Laumeier and Rev. Dr. Harrison Peyton officiating. Burial will be in Wolf Creek Cemetery in Eldorado with military honors. Friends may call on Saturday after 9:00 a.m. at the church. The family requests memorial contributions be made in Aaron's memory to the First United Methodist in Carmi, 100 S. Church St., Carmi, IL 62821 or the Salvation Army, 106 Neely Circle, Carmi, IL 62821 and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi who is in charge of arrangements.
